C:\ Drive full in Windows 7? 6 Steps to make space for your C Drive

Windows 7

As your laptop with Windows 7 Operating System grows older, the C: Drive gradually starts to fill up all the disk space and soon you might start getting popups like “Low Disk Space. You are running out of disk space on system (C:\)…” Now neither you are able to update he applications nor can you install a new software.

Why C Drive getting full?

Although there might be several reasons behind this, few of the key points are listed below:

  1.  If your system is affected by viruses and malwares, they may generate random files that keeps filling the available disk space.
  2. Temporary files, installation files and other such system files may also take up the space.
  3. Different applications as they keep on updating automatically may also add to the space consumption since with every update the size of these Softwares generally increases.

How to free up the space in Windows 7 system?

To get some space in the C drive, we need to perform these steps.

    1.  Windows collects a lot of temporary files and those gets stored in a folder: “temp”. To free that up, press Windows+R keys at the same time. You will see the Run prompt appearing at the left bottom of the computer screen, type “%temp%”.

Press Enter key and once a folder opens, select all the files and folders and delete them. If the following popup appears, press the “Skip” button.

    2. Open your File Explorer and go to Downloads folder. Delete all the files that is no longer needed.

    3.  Delete all your old Windows log files from C:\ -> Windows -> Logs -> CBS. It is also a good practice to clear up the Cache of all your browsers.

For Google Chrome, go to Settings and click on "Clear browsing data", check all the boxes and click on "Clear data".

For Firefox, go to Options and click on "Privacy & Security" tab, check all the boxes and click on "Clear Data...".

    4. Do a clean-up of your disk using the Disk Cleanup tool. Go to Computer, right click on the C: drive icon. Click on Properties button and then Disk Cleanup button. A popup will appear showing some “Progress” bar, let it get completed and click on Clean up system files. Once a new popup opens, check all the boxes and click on OK button.

 5.  If you don’t use the Hibernate feature in your Windows7 OS, you can turn it off. Go to Start menu and type “cmd”, then right click on cmd link appearing in the results list and select Run as administrator. Type “powercfg.exe -h off” in the Command prompt and press enter.

 6. Go to Start menu and type “uninstall”, click on Uninstall a program link from the search list. Check the list of the applications you don’t need, select one from the list and click on “Uninstall”.

If these steps still doesn’t help, you need to extend the C: drive partition.

Hope the above steps helps you to clean up your disk and speed up your computer.
